Clark Cattle Co. started in 1945 when the founder C.V. Clark settled along what is now known as Prairie Creek. Prairie Creek starts on our farm and is the watershed divide running through Illinois wherein rain water decides whether it’s going to the Ohio or Mississippi Rivers. The Black Angus cattle family that have been on the farm for nearly 80 years have been treated with gentle handling, nutritious feed, and an eye towards the future.
Advancements
We have worked at genetic improvements through artificial insemination and embryonic transplants. This has allowed us to advance our research and produce easy keeping cattle.
Around 2001, we started strategically introducing diversified western genetics from the legendary Hoff Scotch Cap Angus ranch in South Dakota that strengthened the structure and phenotype of our cattle herd. Over the years, we’ve continued to add superior genetics from Montana, Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas which have kept our herd at the top of the production game.
The Vision
Our nutrition program has always been driven by our desire to balance the needs of the cattle against basic economic principles. Our quad state region produces various feed by-products that we incorporate into our feed program depending on the time of the year, cattle needs, and feed products available from the farm itself. Ultimately, we’re working to produce a nutritious food that consumers can enjoy.
Raising cattle isn’t for the faint of heart. It requires a person on duty every day that knows how to handle cattle, fix a fence, put out feed, check waterers, or help a newborn calf get going. You’ve got to love it to stick with it and we do!
